The story of Katey
A short form usually settles on one or two spellings within a generation and then stops moving, because everybody has seen it written and copies what they saw. Katie and Katy did that in the nineteenth century. A third option arriving in the twentieth has to overcome that, and mostly does not: Katey appears in the American record in the nineteen-forties, drifts along in small numbers and peaks in the nineteen-eighties without ever getting near its cousins. Late spellings of settled names are almost always rare, and that is a rule with very few exceptions.

Fashion outlook
Katey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
- It carries the whole Katherine family's set of short forms.
- The ey ending makes it visually distinct without changing anything.
- Katie and Katy are both far commoner and will be written instead.
- It reads as a familiar form, and formal settings will look for something longer.
- The spelling is rare enough that it will always be queried.
