Where it comes from

The story of Kassia

Kassia is said to have been a candidate in a bride-show for the emperor Theophilos, and to have lost it by answering back — he remarked that woman is the source of evil and she replied that woman is also the source of better things. She founded a convent and wrote hymns; her setting for Holy Wednesday is sung every year in Orthodox churches, which makes her the only woman composer in that living repertoire.

Kassia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2025, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

#831
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kassia went to 35 girls in 2025, but Cassia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 129, which makes it the 831st most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,236 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,459 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 45,922 for Kassia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented historical figure of genuinely remarkable standing.
  • Sia and Kass are both usable short forms in current use.
  • Six letters and three syllables, manageable to write.
What to consider
  • The meaning is genuinely unsettled.
  • Polish Kasia is a short form of Katarzyna and is said quite differently.
  • Cassia with a c is the more common English spelling.
