Where it comes from

The story of Cassia

Job's three daughters at the end of the book are Jemimah, Keziah and Keren-happuch, and the text says no women in the land were as beautiful; it also says he gave them an inheritance alongside their brothers, which was unusual. Cassia is the Greek of Keziah. It appears in American records rising and in current use.

Meaning

cinnamon-like spice

From the Greek kasia, borrowed from a Semitic word — the Hebrew qetsi'ah, from a root meaning 'to strip off bark'. Cassia is a genuine spice, related to but distinct from true cinnamon. Job 42 names a daughter Keziah from the same word. The route is documented.

Cassia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2025, with 94 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cassia went to 94 girls in 2025, but Kassia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 129, which makes it the 831st most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,186 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,459 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 17,099 for Cassia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That Job's daughters were given an inheritance alongside their brothers is a genuinely striking detail.
  • Cass and Cassie are two short forms, both with real records.
  • The spice meaning is concrete and pleasant.
What to consider
  • The pronunciation splits between three syllables and two.
  • Cassia, Cassidy and Cassandra are all close enough to cause confusion.
  • Keziah is the biblical spelling and looks unrelated.
