From Yohanan to Kashawn
The story of Kashawn
Sean reached English-speaking America as an Irish name, was respelled Shawn and Shaun so that English readers could say it, and then behaved like raw material. Once the syllable was familiar it began appearing as the second half of compounds: DeShawn, RaShawn, LaShawn, KaShawn, JaShawn, TreShawn, KeyShawn. Counting the whole family, the Irish form of John has probably supplied more American given names in the last fifty years than John itself, and each of them ends in a Hebrew sentence about divine favor that has passed through Greek, Latin, French and Irish on the way. The prefix at the front is doing the distinguishing and the ending is doing the sound, and the etymology survives untouched underneath both.
Meaning
Hebrew Yohanan, Yah is gracious
Kashawn joins the Ka- prefix to Shawn, the English respelling of Irish Sean, which came from Norman French Jehan and ultimately from Hebrew Yohanan. The prefix carries no meaning. The peak is 1993.
