Where it comes from

The story of Kasandra

Cassandra was a daughter of Priam; Apollo gave her prophecy and, when she refused him, added that no one would believe her. She foresaw the fall of Troy and was not heeded, and Aeschylus gives her one of the most harrowing scenes in Greek tragedy. Despite the story the name has been used steadily since the Middle Ages, when the Troy romances made it fashionable, and it rose sharply in America through the 1970s and 1980s. Kasandra is one of the respellings that followed, peaking in 1993, alongside Kassandra and Casandra.

Contested; possibly one who shines upon men

Greek Kassandra is generally read with a second element from anēr, andros, man, and a first element from kekasmai, to excel or shine — giving something like she who excels among men. The derivation is old and not secure. The K spelling of Kasandra follows the Greek kappa rather than the Latin c, and is also a modern American respelling; both explanations apply to different bearers.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kasandra went to 23 girls in 2025, but Casandra is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 32, which makes it the 928th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,482 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 50,227 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 69,881 for Kasandra itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kassie and Sandra are both complete short forms with their own histories.
  • The Greek story is famous and easy to look up.
  • Everyone can say it after one hearing.
What to consider
  • Cassandra is the standard spelling and will be written for it.
  • The mythological bearer's story is one of being disbelieved, which is a heavy thing.
  • In English a Cassandra is a person whose warnings are ignored, which is now a common noun.
