Virgil's Camilla is a huntress and warrior raised in the wild who dies fighting Aeneas's allies — one of the more memorable figures in the poem. The name spread across Europe, and Danish, Norwegian, Hungarian and Russian use Kamilla. Scandinavian and Eastern European emigration brought it to America, where it is in current use.
