The story of Angeline
Angelus and Angela were used in Italy from the Middle Ages, and Angela of Foligno and Angela Merici both made the feminine a saint's name. French formed Angeline, and English-speaking countries borrowed it alongside Angelina and Angelica. American use rose through the nineteenth century and peaked around 1880, with a smaller revival in the 1990s.
Meaning
messenger
From the Greek angelos, 'messenger'. Greek translators of the Hebrew scriptures used it for the beings sent by God, and Latin took it as angelus, from which every European language gets its word for an angel. The -ine ending is a French diminutive carrying affection rather than meaning.
