The Welsh call their country Cymru and themselves Cymry, from a word meaning compatriots — a name a people gave themselves, unlike Wales, which is what their English-speaking neighbors called them. Medieval Latin writers rendered it Cambria. The word survives in geology, where the Cambrian period is named for Welsh rocks, and it entered American given names in the twentieth century as Cambria and Cambry. Kambree is the newest layer.
