Kaile could be a Scottish men's name respelled or the front half of a much newer women's one, and the record holds it for sons and daughters both. The silent letters in it are a reminder that English spelling contains some deliberate mistakes.

Where it comes from

Our story of Kaile

The word aisle has two letters in it that do not belong there and were put in on purpose. It came into English from Old French as ele, meaning a wing, which is exactly what the side passages of a church are: wings off the main body. Renaissance editors, who liked spellings to display their Latin ancestry, restored a letter from the Latin ala — fair enough — and then a second group confused the word with isle, from a different Latin root entirely, and inserted an s that had never been in either. Both letters are silent and both are now compulsory. English has several of these: the b in debt and doubt, the c in scissors, the s in island. They are all corrections made by people who were wrong, and every one of them is still being taught to children as the right way to spell.

Two routes are possible. As a respelling of Kyle it inherits a Gaelic word about narrowness; as a clipping of Kaylee it inherits nothing, because that name has no etymology. Nothing in the record separates them, and this spelling gives no clue either way.

Pronouncing Kaile

KYLE

One syllable for most bearers, said exactly like the men's name. Some families give it two, saying KAY-lee, and the spelling supports both.

Kaile sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 42 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Kaile sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • It is short and fits any field on any form.
  • Both readings are familiar sounds, so neither needs teaching.
What to consider
  • The name has two syllable counts in use, so it is said two quite different ways.
  • Kyle, Kaylee and Kayle will all be written for it.
  • Which parent name it belongs to is not recorded, so the meaning has two possible routes.
