The story of Kadiatou
Khadija bint Khuwaylid ran a caravan trade in Mecca, hired Muhammad to manage a journey, and proposed marriage to him; she was the first to accept his message. Her standing in Islamic memory is very high. West African languages added the -tou suffix, which marks women's names across Mande and Fula naming, giving Kadiatou, Aissatou and Fatoumata.

Not established
Khadija's own derivation is unsettled; readings include a word for a premature child and one connected to trustworthiness, neither established. The -tou ending is a Mande and Fula feminine suffix added in West African usage.
