Where it comes from

The story of Justyn

Justin Martyr was a second-century philosopher who converted and wrote the first substantial defense of Christianity to a pagan audience; two Byzantine emperors also carried the name. Polish spells it Justyn, with the y that Polish uses for this vowel, and it is well used there. It reaches American records both from Polish families and as a modern respelling of the English Justin.

Meaning

just, lawful

From Latin iustus, just or lawful, on ius, law or right; Iustinus is the derived name. The same root gives judge, jury, injury and jurisprudence, all from the vocabulary of Roman law.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Justyn went to 25 boys in 2025, but Justin is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 1,537, which makes it the 233rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,906 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,111 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 68,323 for Justyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning with a genuinely concrete legal legacy.
  • A documented early Christian writer of real importance behind it.
  • Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
What to consider
  • Justin is the standard English spelling and will be written for him.
  • The Polish pronunciation begins with a y sound, which Americans will not use.
  • It is strongly associated with one American decade.
