Juliane
Feminine · “of the Julian family”
The earliest surviving book in English known to be written by a woman was written by someone called Julian. She was an anchoress at Norwich, walled into a cell beside a church, and she took her name from the church rather than the other way around — which is why a fourteenth-century woman is called Julian and not Juliana. Her book is about a series of visions and is still in print.

The story of Juliane
Juliana was a common late Roman name and became a Christian one through several martyrs. It spread across Europe and produced local forms everywhere: Juliane in German and French, Giuliana in Italian, Julianna in Hungarian and Polish. The German and French versions differ in one important way — German sounds the final e as a syllable, and French does not — so the same four letters make a three-syllable name in one country and a two-syllable one in the other. American records carry Juliane from the 1940s, arriving through German families in particular.

of the Julian family
From the Roman family name Julius, whose own meaning the Romans had already lost — the readings offered are a link to a Greek word for downy-bearded and a descent from Jupiter, neither established. Juliana is the feminine of Julianus, and it was carried by early martyrs, which is how it reached the church calendar.

yoo-lee-AH-nuh
Four syllables in German, where the j is a y and the final e is sounded as a light uh. French makes it three and drops the ending. Americans usually say joo-lee-AN, in three syllables with a silent e, which is a fourth version again.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Starlene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Juliane's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Starlene climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Starlene's path sketches the road Juliane is walking now.
Juliane sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Julia and Jules are both available and are among the most current short forms in use.
- It is standard in German rather than an American variation.
- Four open syllables with no consonant cluster anywhere in the name.
- The Roman family behind it is among the best documented in history.
- The final e is sounded in German and silent in American English, so the name arrives in different lengths.
- Juliana and Julianne are both commoner and will be written instead.
- It is easily confused with Julianne and Julienne, the second of which is also a way of cutting vegetables.
