Crusaders carried Jordan water home in flasks and baptized their children with it, and then named the children after the river. That is why Jordan is a European name at all: it arrived in the twelfth century as a souvenir, attached to the water rather than to the place.

The story of Jourdyn
The Jordan falls further than almost any river its size. It rises near Mount Hermon, runs down through the Sea of Galilee, and ends in the Dead Sea, which is the lowest exposed land on earth — so the name, the descending one, is a plain description. Returning crusaders brought its water back for baptisms, and the practice put the name into use across France, England and Germany within a generation. It was a man's name for eight hundred years and crossed to women in America in the 1980s. The -dyn ending is a modern respelling: the ending was already unstressed, so the letters can be changed without changing anything audible.
Meaning
the one that goes down
Hebrew Yarden, from yarad, to descend — the river does exactly that, dropping from the hills of the north to a lake more than four hundred meters below sea level. The name describes the river's behavior rather than anything about it, which is common for very old river names.

The trade-off
- A settled Hebrew meaning that describes something you can still watch the river doing.
- Three short forms, all of which serve either child.
- Two syllables and no sound anyone will struggle with.
- Jordan is far commoner and at least five spellings compete, so this will be given letter by letter.
- It is a river, a country and a very famous athlete, and none of those associations is yours to choose.
- The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper, which reverses the name's history.
