Josseline
Feminine · “Germanic Gaut”
The French ending -ine ended up naming molecules. Chemists of the nineteenth century took it for their new substances, which is why we have chlorine, morphine, caffeine, nicotine and adrenaline, and it had already been in use for centuries making feminine names: Caroline, Josephine, Delphine, Josseline. One suffix, two entirely separate careers.

The story of Josseline
The -ine suffix comes from Latin -ina, a feminine adjectival ending meaning of or belonging to, and French inherited it as a general way of making feminines and diminutives. Chemistry borrowed it in the early nineteenth century when a large number of new substances needed names, and the borrowing was systematic: alkaloids in particular took -ine, which is why morphine, quinine, strychnine, nicotine, caffeine and codeine all end alike. English then split the ending in two, keeping -ine for chemicals and using -ine or -een for names, though the spelling of the two stayed identical. That is why Caroline and chlorine rhyme on paper and not in speech, and why Josseline can be read two ways by an English speaker who has never met it.

The Safiyyah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Josseline's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Safiyyah climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record.
