Josalyn
Feminine · “of the Gauts”
The commonest sound in English has no letter. It is the neutral vowel in the middle of sofa, about and pencil, and it can be written a, e, i, o, u or y with no difference at all. That is why Jocelyn, Joselyn, Josalyn and Joslynn exist: the middle vowel is not a vowel, it is a gap.

The story of Josalyn
Linguists call the neutral vowel a schwa and it does more work in English than any other sound: unstressed syllables collapse into it almost automatically, which is why the second syllable of Jocelyn carries no information at all. Spelling systems that were designed rather than inherited give it a letter. English, which was never designed, gives it six, and lets writers choose. That is the whole explanation for a large share of American respellings — they are not changing the name, they are choosing a different letter for a sound that has none. The name underneath is Norman, was a man's for eight centuries, and is unrelated to every Jo- name it now sits beside.
Meaning
of the Gauts
From Gautelen, a Germanic diminutive built on the name of a people — the Gauts, who appear in Old English as the Geats. It has nothing to do with Joseph, despite the opening, and nothing to do with Joyce, which is a separate name.

Josalyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shamara climbed just as high around 1986, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shamara's path sketches the road Josalyn is walking now.
Josalyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
