The story of Jorie
Margaret arrived in Scotland with an eleventh-century queen and became one of the commonest names in Britain; the French Marguerite gave English Marjorie, which was widely used in the Middle Ages, then revived hard in the early twentieth century. Every long name gets clipped, and Marjorie produced Marge, Margie and, less obviously, Jorie, which takes the tail rather than the head. It has been used on its own since the middle of the last century.
Meaning
pearl
Through Marjorie from French Marguerite, from Latin margarita and Greek margarites, a pearl. The French word also names the daisy, which is why the flower and the gem sit inside the same name.

The Sharlee test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jorie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sharlee climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sharlee's path sketches the road Jorie is walking now.

- Jorie, Jory and Jorrie are all in use, so the spelling will be asked for.
- It reads as a nickname to many people, who will ask what it is short for.
