The story of Jordon
The river itself is small. It runs about two hundred and fifty kilometres, is in places narrow enough to throw a stone across, and its flow has been reduced so far by irrigation that the lower stretch is a fraction of what it was. Set against the Nile or the Euphrates it barely registers as a river at all. Its reputation is entirely a matter of what happened on its banks and of the fact that three religions kept telling the story, which makes it the clearest case there is of a place mattering out of all proportion to its size.
Meaning

The Sydney test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jordon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sydney climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sydney's path sketches the road Jordon is walking now.
