The story of Jordon
The river itself is small. It runs about two hundred and fifty kilometres, is in places narrow enough to throw a stone across, and its flow has been reduced so far by irrigation that the lower stretch is a fraction of what it was. Set against the Nile or the Euphrates it barely registers as a river at all. Its reputation is entirely a matter of what happened on its banks and of the fact that three religions kept telling the story, which makes it the clearest case there is of a place mattering out of all proportion to its size.

Fashion outlook
Jordon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely settled even where the spelling is not.
- It is instantly familiar without being the standard spelling.
- It has several short forms of quite different registers.
- Jordan is overwhelmingly standard and this gets corrected for life.
- Three spellings compete and none of them sounds different.
- The record holds girls as well, and the girl is much the smaller side.
