Where it comes from

The story of Jonie

Joan was one of the two or three commonest women's names in medieval England — so common that court rolls distinguish Joans by their fathers' trades. Then it nearly died. By the eighteenth century it had been almost entirely replaced by Jane, and it took a nineteenth-century revival of medieval taste, and one French saint whose name was translated into English, to bring it back at all. Joan is one of the clearest cases in the records of a name going from ubiquity to near-extinction and back, and the pet forms track it: Joanie and Jonie belong to the second life rather than the first.

Meaning

God is gracious

A pet form of Joan or Joanne, both feminines of John, from Hebrew Yochanan: God is gracious, or God has shown favor. Every name in the family carries the same sentence, in whatever language it has passed through.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jonie went to 8 girls in 2025, but Jonnie is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 24, which makes it the 936th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,981 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 66,969 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Jonie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
