Jonathon
Masculine · “God has given”
Jonathon is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 65,612 boys against 224 girls since 1880.
Jonathon is the spelling that follows the ear rather than the eye: both endings sound the same in English, and this one writes the sound down. Behind it stands one of the oldest names still in daily use — the Hebrew Yehonatan, carried by the friend of David in the books of Samuel, and spoken continuously ever since. It arrived on American birth records early in the twentieth century, rose through the postwar decades, and is now easing back down without disappearing.

The story of Jonathon
The name begins as Hebrew Yehonatan, shortened in the Bible itself to Yonatan, and belongs first to Jonathan the son of King Saul, whose friendship with David is told in the books of Samuel. Greek translators of the Hebrew scriptures wrote it Ionathan, Latin passed it on, and English-speaking Protestants took it up after the Reformation, when biblical names spread widely beyond the church calendar. Jonathon is a later English respelling: because the final syllable is unstressed, -an and -on sound identical in speech, and writers settled the ambiguity both ways. Jonathan remained the dominant form, while Jonathon traveled alongside it, common enough in American records to have its own long climb and its own gentle descent.

The Abraham test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jonathon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Abraham climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Abraham's path sketches the road Jonathon is walking now.
Jonathon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Everyone can say it on sight — the sound is fully familiar even where this exact spelling is not.
- Several long-established short forms, from Jon to Jonny, so the bearer has room to choose.
- A continuous written record going back to the Hebrew books of Samuel, with forms in Hebrew, Greek, Spanish, French and Italian.
- Strongly represented among adults today, which makes it recognizable to grown-ups while being unlikely to repeat in a classroom.
- It will be written Jonathan by default for life — on forms, in emails, on coffee cups. Anyone with this spelling learns to say "Jonathon, with an O" early and often.
- Because the two spellings sound identical, the distinction only ever exists on paper. Some bearers guard it; others stop correcting people.
- It sits below its high-water mark right now, which means fewer age-mates share it, but also that it reads as a name of the last few decades rather than a fresh arrival.
