Arjan
Masculine · “Either "bright”
Arjan is one of those short names that several languages arrived at independently: it is a familiar Dutch men's name, an Albanian one, and a Punjabi one, all spelled exactly this way. Two syllables, no silent letters, and a first sound that opens the mouth. In the United States it has been climbing steadily rather than arriving all at once.

Arjan first appears in US birth records in 1990 — 35 years ago. The typical Arjan is a kid of about 7 — this name's wave is very recent. About 1,000 people named Arjan are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Arjan
The oldest of Arjan's roads runs back to the Sanskrit epic tradition, where Arjuna is the archer of the Mahabharata; the shortened Arjun and Arjan have long been in use across northern India and Punjab, and Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru, carried this exact form in the late sixteenth century. Quite separately, Dutch speakers wore Adriaan down over centuries into Arjaan, then Arjan and Arjen, and it became a standard men's name in the Netherlands. Albanian has its own Arjan, connected with Arian. Nothing links these lines except the sound they landed on — which is why the spelling now turns up in American records from families with very different histories, concentrated in California, New York and Washington.
Meaningscholars disagree
Either "bright, silver, white" through Sanskrit Arjuna, or "of Hadria" through Dutch Adriaan — depending on which line a family is following
Arjan is a genuine meeting point rather than one name with a disputed sense. In South Asian use it belongs to the Arjuna/Arjun family, from a Sanskrit word for white, bright or silvery. In the Netherlands it is a contracted form of Adriaan, itself from Latin Hadrianus, "from Hadria" — a town in northern Italy. Albanian Arjan is usually grouped with Arian. All three are well documented; the name you choose is whichever road your family stands on.

Pronouncing Arjan
AR-jun
South Asian families usually say AR-jun, close to Arjun with a light second syllable. Dutch speakers say AR-yahn, since Dutch j sounds like English y. Albanian use tends toward ar-YAHN, stress on the second syllable. All three are correct for their own tradition, so it is worth deciding early which one you will teach people.

The Jarron test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arjan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jarron climbed just as high around 1989, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jarron's path sketches the road Arjan is walking now.
Arjan is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- One spelling that works unchanged in Dutch, Albanian and Punjabi contexts — useful in a family with more than one language in it.
- Short, two syllables, and spelled the way it is said in English once the stress is set; no silent letters to explain.
- Established short forms already exist: Arj and AJ come ready-made.
- A long documented record on the South Asian side, where Arjan and Arjun have been in continuous use for centuries.
- The pronunciation genuinely splits by community — AR-jun, AR-yahn, ar-YAHN. Whichever you pick, some people who know the name will confidently say another version, and gentle correcting becomes part of the routine.
- Expect Arjun in writing. It is the far more familiar spelling in the US, and forms will come back with the extra u.
- Said as ar-YAHN, the name sits close to the English word "Aryan" for listeners who don't know it. Worth being aware of, though it has never stopped the name's use in Albania or the Netherlands.
- A child with this name will most likely be the only one in the school — good for being known by first name alone, less good on the day everyone wants their name on a keychain.
Nobody names a baby alone.
