Ziggy is the friendly end of a very old name: the Germanic sig- family, where Sigmund and Siegfried and the Polish Zygmunt all begin. It is two beats, a hard Z and a bright ee, the kind of shape that survives being shouted across a yard. Central Europe has been shortening these names affectionately for centuries; English speakers took the short form and let it stand on its own.

Ziggy first appears in US birth records in 1988 — 37 years ago. The typical Ziggy is a kid of about 5 — this name's wave is very recent. About 1,500 people named Ziggy are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Ziggy
The sig- names are among the oldest continuously used in Europe, carried through Old High German and Old Norse and into medieval royal lines — kings of Poland bore the name Zygmunt through the sixteenth century. Wherever those names went, a short form followed: Siggi in German-speaking countries, Zyga and Zygmus in Polish, Zsiga in Hungarian. The z-spelling that English uses comes by way of that Central and Eastern European branch, and it arrived in America with families who had been saying it at home all along. In the early 1970s it went from a household nickname to something a stranger recognized, first through a newspaper comic strip and then through David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust persona — and it has been quietly used as a full given name in the United States ever since.
Meaning
a pet form of names built on Germanic sigu, "victory" — Sigmund, "victory protector"
Ziggy has no separate meaning of its own; it inherits whichever long name stands behind it. Sigmund combines sigu "victory" with munt "protection"; Siegfried pairs the same "victory" with frid "peace"; the Polish Zygmunt is Sigmund's own descendant.

The Izaac test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ziggy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Izaac climbed just as high around 2005, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Izaac's path sketches the road Ziggy is walking now.
Ziggy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads the way it is written once the Z is seen — two syllables, no silent letters, no competing pronunciations.
- Backed by a full formal name if you want one: Sigmund, Siegfried and Zygmunt all shorten to it naturally.
- Recognizable across German, Polish, Hungarian and Czech naming traditions, which share the same sig- root.
- A child with this name is unlikely to share it with a classmate, while adults will still find it familiar rather than puzzling.
- It carries a strong cultural echo — Bowie's Ziggy Stardust persona, and Ziggy Marley — so most adults will hear a reference before they hear a name. That fades with a child who owns it, but it will come up.
- It reads as a nickname to many ears, which some people love and others find limiting in formal settings. Putting Sigmund or Zygmunt on the certificate keeps both doors open.
- Expect a fair number of Siggy spellings, and the occasional assumption that it is short for something the family has to explain.
- The name's use in the US is very recent, so a Ziggy will mostly meet grown-ups who have never met another one.
