Joelene
Feminine · “the Lord is God”
Joel and Elijah are the same sentence backwards. Yo-el is the Lord is God; Eli-yahu is my God is the Lord. Two of the most familiar names in the Hebrew Bible are the same two divine names in opposite order, and each is a small argument about which one is which.

The story of Joelene
Hebrew has two words that function as names for God, and a great many personal names are short sentences pairing one of them with something else. Joel says the Lord is God, and it is a claim rather than a description — the sort of thing a name asserts in a country where other gods were on offer. Elijah says the same thing with the elements reversed, and the story attached to him is precisely an argument about whose god is real. As an American woman's name, this spelling has a second and much more recent parent: a song released in 1973 about a woman asking a rival not to take her man made Jolene familiar to everyone at once, and the respellings followed.
Meaning
the Lord is God
Hebrew Yoel joins a shortened form of the divine name to el, God. Elijah joins the same two elements the other way round. Joelene is a modern feminine built on Joel, or a respelling of Jolene; the -ene ending is American and carries no meaning.

The Cynitha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joelene's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cynitha climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cynitha's path sketches the road Joelene is walking now.
Joelene sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
