Our story of Jj
Our story of JJ belongs to a genuine and under-recorded American practice. Across the South and the lower Midwest, boys were given initials as a full legal name — not J. D. for anything, just J. D. — often enough that the army had to make a rule about it, requiring men whose names were letters to write them as if they stood for something. Whole families did it across generations. It is one of the very few naming traditions that English-speaking America invented rather than inherited, and JJ belongs to it: a name made entirely of the alphabet, meaning nothing on purpose.
Meaningnot established
Not established
There is nothing to translate. Initial-names come in two kinds: those that abbreviate two given names, and those that are the given name outright, standing for nothing. The second kind is well documented in the American South, where men were registered with initials only and the letters had no words behind them. Which kind a particular JJ is depends entirely on the family.

The Thorne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jj's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Thorne climbed just as high around 1956, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Thorne's path sketches the road Jj is walking now.
Jj sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
