Leopoldo
Masculine · “bold among the people”
Leopoldo has no lion in it, whatever the first three letters suggest. The Germanic original was Leudbald — bold among the people — and the Leo arrived later, by a misreading that stuck so thoroughly nobody bothers to correct it.

The story of Leopoldo
Leopold was a Frankish and then an Austrian royal name; a twelfth-century margrave of Austria was canonized and became the country's patron, which made the name common across the German-speaking world. Habsburg emperors carried it, and Spain and Italy took Leopoldo along with the dynasty. Belgium's kings have carried it too. It reaches United States records with Italian, Spanish and Mexican families, and its record here sits mostly in the early twentieth century.
Meaning
bold among the people
Germanic Leudbald joins leud, 'people', to bald, 'bold, brave'. Medieval Latin scribes rewrote the first element as Leo, the lion, because it looked like it, and the spelling never went back. So the name looks like a lion and means a people, and the reading is documented at both stages.

The Opal test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Leopoldo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Opal climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Opal's path sketches the road Leopoldo is walking now.
Leopoldo sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Leo, Poldi and Polo are three ready short forms across three languages.
- A documented Germanic origin with a genuinely surprising fact inside it.
- Four syllables give it real formality, with everyday forms immediately available.
- The Leo at the front is a scribal accident and does not mean lion, which surprises everyone.
- Four syllables is long for daily use and the name will usually be shortened.
- The Belgian king of the name has a very difficult historical record, which comes up.
