The story of Jibril
Gabriel appears in the book of Daniel explaining a vision, in the gospel of Luke announcing two births, and in Islamic tradition as the angel who brings the revelation to Muhammad — which makes him, in that tradition, the messenger through whom the entire Qur'an arrives. That gives the name a weight in Muslim families that the English Gabriel does not quite carry in Christian ones. Jibril and Jibra'il are both used, and the name reaches United States records from Arabic-speaking, Somali, West African and South Asian families as well as from African-American families.
Meaning
God is my strength
Hebrew Gavri'el joins gever, 'strong man', to El, 'God', and is generally read as 'God is my strength' or 'man of God'. The Arabic Jibril and Jibra'il carry the name across without changing it, and the meaning is not disputed on either side.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jibril's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Levell climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Levell's path sketches the road Jibril is walking now.
