Where it comes from

Our story of Levell

During the English civil wars a movement grew up inside the parliamentary army arguing for something nobody in authority was prepared to hear: a written constitution, religious tolerance, equality before the law, and the vote for most adult men. Their opponents called them Levellers, meaning that they wanted to level society, and the name stuck although the movement itself largely rejected it. The debates were recorded at Putney and are extraordinary to read: ordinary soldiers arguing with generals about whether a man without property has any stake in the country. They were defeated, some were shot, and the ideas went underground for two centuries before turning up again nearly word for word.

Fashion outlook

Levell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lev comes off the front as a short form and is a name in its own right elsewhere.
  • The stress is usually unmistakable, so first attempts land correctly.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
What to consider
  • Two pronunciations are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • It is one letter from an ordinary English word, which people will notice.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
