In Colombia, Ecuador and Peru you will meet men called Jhon and Jhonny. The h is doing something specific: Spanish j is a throat sound, so on its own it would give the wrong name entirely, and jh was invented locally to say the English j. It is a spelling convention with a region.

Where it comes from

The story of Jhoana

Andean Spanish produced a whole stock of respellings in the second half of the twentieth century, made to carry English and international names into a Spanish spelling system that could not otherwise hold them. Jhon and Jhonny for John and Johnny. Deysi for Daisy. Yeison for Jason. Brayan for Brian. Estiven for Steven. Every one of them is a solution to a real problem: Spanish spelling is regular, English names are not, and something has to give. The jh device is the neatest of them, because it takes a letter Spanish barely uses and gives it a job. The name underneath is one of the oldest in Europe.

Meaning

God is gracious

Joanna is the feminine of John, from Hebrew Yochanan: God is gracious. Jhoana is the Andean Spanish spelling, using jh to represent the English j sound that Spanish orthography has no letter for. The name and the meaning are entirely standard; only the spelling is local.

Pronouncing Jhoana

joh-AH-nah

Three syllables, stress in the middle, with the j of jam — which is the entire point of the h. Without it a Spanish reader would say ho-AH-nah, with the j as a throat sound.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Hebrew meaning shared with the largest name family in Europe.
  • The spelling solves a real problem rather than decorating the name.
  • Three open syllables and nothing hard to say in either language.
What to consider
  • English readers see an unnecessary h, because English does not have the problem the spelling solves.
  • Joana, Johana and Juana are all in use and all commoner.
  • The convention marks the name as Andean, which may be exactly the point.
