Our story of Jerzi
Ours, offered as ours. Jersey the island is a Norse name — the Vikings named the Channel Islands and the -ey ending is theirs, the same one in Orkney and Anglesey — and the island gave its name to a knitted fabric, a breed of cow and an American state. Polish Jerzy, quite separately, is George. Neither is likely to be what an American family had in mind, and both are more interesting than the spelling suggests.

farmer; or an island name
Polish Jerzy is the form of George, from Greek georgos, a worker of the earth. The Channel Island of Jersey is a Norse name, probably joining a personal name to ey, an island. The two are unrelated and this spelling sits between them.

The Tyrhonda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jerzi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tyrhonda climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tyrhonda's path sketches the road Jerzi is walking now.
Jerzi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
