Where it comes from

The story of Jermon

Germanus was a Roman word before it was a name, and it became one through a fifth-century bishop of Auxerre whose cult spread across northern France — which is why Germain and Germaine are French rather than Italian. English use was slight until the Jackson 5 put Jermaine in front of American audiences, after which the name and its variants spread quickly. Jermon belongs to that wave: shorter, respelled, built by families who had heard the name constantly and wrote their own version of it. The Latin word for a brother, arriving through a group of brothers, is a coincidence the name did not plan.

of the same parents; a full brother

If the name is a form of Jermaine, the derivation is clear: Latin germanus, from which French made Germain and Germaine. If it was built from sound alone, on the pattern of the Jer- names, then no meaning attaches. The record does not say which, and both are plausible for a name of this generation.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is shorter and plainer than Jermaine while staying obviously related to it.
  • There is a real Latin word underneath, and it means something worth telling.
  • Nothing in the spelling is hard to write or read at first sight.
What to consider
  • The stress is unfixed, which means the name arrives in two versions from two rooms.
  • It will be written Jermaine, Jermon and Jarmon by people who half-remember it.
  • It is tied by sound to one decade of American music, which some hear as warmth and some as datedness.
