From J.E.B. to Jeb
Our story of Jeb
Initials-as-names is a distinctly American practice with a distinctly Southern center. It works because English letter names are already syllables: J.E.B. said quickly is jeb, C.J. is seejay, and the step from saying it to writing it is very short. In the American South the practice went further than anywhere else — men known formally by two initials and nothing more appear throughout nineteenth- and twentieth-century records, and Social Security applications from that region carry names consisting of single letters. Jeb is what happens when the initials fuse completely into one syllable, which is rarer than the two-syllable versions and produces something indistinguishable from an ordinary short name.

Not established
There is no word behind Jeb when it comes from initials, and that is the usual route. Where it does not, it may be a clipping of Jebediah — which is itself a variant of Jedidiah, Hebrew for 'beloved of Yahweh', a name given to Solomon in the Second Book of Samuel. Which of the two a given Jeb carries is a family fact. Any dictionary gloss offered for the initials version is invented.

The Fidencio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jeb's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Fidencio climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Fidencio's path sketches the road Jeb is walking now.
Jeb sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
