Jeanluc
Masculine · “God is gracious”
Jean-Luc is two of the four Gospel writers joined, and in France it is written with a hyphen and treated as one name. John is Hebrew and means God is gracious; Luke is Latin and probably means a man from Lucania. Written as one word, it is an American adjustment.

The story of Jeanluc
Compound given names became a French fashion in the twentieth century, with Jean-Pierre, Jean-Paul, Jean-Claude and Jean-Luc all in heavy use from the nineteen-forties. The hyphen matters in France: the two halves are one name and the person is called by both. In American records the hyphen usually disappears, since forms do not handle it, which is how Jeanluc appears. A widely watched television series of the late nineteen-eighties gave the name an American afterlife it would not otherwise have had.

God is gracious, joined to a man from Lucania
Jean is settled: Hebrew Yochanan, God is gracious. Luc is less so: Latin Lucas is generally read as a man from Lucania in southern Italy, though a connection to lux, light, is often printed and is not supported. So half the compound is clear and half is not.

The Vaughan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jeanluc's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vaughan climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vaughan's path sketches the road Jeanluc is walking now.

The trade-off
- Both halves are complete names, so the child has two formal options ready made.
- It is unmistakably French, which is the point for the families who choose it.
- The Italian Gianluca is the same compound, so it travels within Europe.
- The hyphen is standard in France and disappears in American paperwork, so records diverge.
- The French vowels have no English equivalent, so the name is always approximated.
- It carries a very well-known television captain, which is charm to some families and noise to others.
