The hazel was the tree of knowledge in Ireland. Nine hazels grew over a well, their nuts fell in, and the salmon that ate them became the wisest creature alive — which is why the hero of the story gets his knowledge from tasting a fish. Divining rods are cut from hazel for related reasons.

The story of Jazel
Hazel does an unusual amount of work in European folklore. In Ireland it is the tree of wisdom and poetry. In England and Germany a forked hazel rod is the traditional tool for dowsing, and hazel was cut for protective wands and for the stakes that fenced sacred ground. The word itself is Old English, haesel, and the eye color came much later, from the color of the nut. Whether any of that stands behind this name is doubtful. What is certain is the shape: a familiar English word with one letter changed, which is one of the two commonest ways a new American name gets made.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source has been established. Jazel sits between Hazel, the English tree name, and the Jaz- family built on Jasmine, and neither has been shown to be the parent. The z may also simply be a modern spelling choice, which is common in Mexican-American naming.
Pronouncing Jazel
juh-ZEL
Two syllables, stress on the second. JAY-zel, front-loaded and with a long first vowel, is also used, and the spelling gives no way to choose between them.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Suleima test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jazel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Suleima climbed just as high around 1990, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- Two syllables, five letters, and nothing hard to say in English or Spanish.
- Three short forms, one of which serves either child.
- The z makes it hard to mishear across a room.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled and the spelling supports both readings.
- Jazelle, Jazzel and Hazel are all in use and close enough to be substituted.
- There is no documented meaning, which is worth deciding about in advance.
