Where it comes from

The story of Jaynie

Jane arrived in English as Jehanne, lost its middle syllable, and became so ordinary by the sixteenth century that it stopped carrying any information at all. That is what qualified it for the law. English courts needed placeholder names for parties whose real names were unknown or withheld, and used John Doe and Richard Roe for men and Jane Doe for women, in fictitious cases invented to test points of land law. The names outlived the procedure. The a in Jane is a long vowel that English usually writes with a silent e, and American spelling replaced that with ay, which does the same job more visibly. Jaynie is Jane with the vowel spelled out and a pet ending attached.

Meaning

God is gracious

Jane is the English feminine of John, from Hebrew Yochanan: God is gracious. It came through Old French Jehanne. The ay in this spelling is an American respelling of the same sound, and the -ie ending is a pet form written as though it were the whole name.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Hebrew meaning inherited from one of the oldest names in Europe.
  • Jane sits inside it as a formal alternative for anyone who wants one.
  • Two syllables that survive being said across a room.
What to consider
  • Janie is the commoner spelling of the same sound, and this one will be corrected toward it.
  • It is a pet form used as a full name, which reads as informal on a résumé.
  • Jane carries a long association with plainness, and people who know the phrase will make it.
