Jayden
Masculine · “Not settled”
Jayden is given to both — 253,989 boys and 22,071 girls since 1880. See Jayden as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Jayden belongs to the small set of names that Americans built themselves, and it moved through the country faster than almost anything else of its generation. It ends the way Aiden, Hayden and Braden do, but the opening J gives it a harder edge and a clear carry across a room. Two syllables, no silent letters, and everyone who hears it knows how to say it.

Where it comes from
From Jadon to Jayden
The story of Jayden
The oldest thread runs back to Jadon in the Book of Nehemiah, a Meronothite listed among the builders who rebuilt Jerusalem's wall after the exile — a name mentioned once and then left alone for centuries. The modern name surfaced in the United States in the later twentieth century, first as Jaden, and the Jayden spelling followed close behind. Its rise ran alongside the great wave of -aden names, and it reached further than most of them, becoming one of the defining boys' names of the early twenty-first century in America. It crossed into Canada too, where it still charts, and turns up on English-speaking children well beyond North America.

Not settled — either from Hebrew Jadon, or a modern English coinage
Two serious readings compete. The first ties Jayden to Jadon, a name that appears in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Nehemiah, borne by one of the men who repaired the walls of Jerusalem; that name is usually read from a root meaning 'to judge' or 'thankful', though Hebraists differ. The second treats Jayden as a straightforward American invention — the sound of Jay joined to the -aden ending shared by Aiden, Hayden and Caden, made because it sounded right rather than because it meant anything. Both accounts have respectable support, and the truth may be that the biblical Jadon gave the spelling a foothold while the rhyme did the rest of the work.

The Joseph test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jayden's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Joseph climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Joseph's path sketches the road Jayden is walking now.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly the first time for any English speaker — no silent letters, no ambiguous vowels.
- Comes with Jay already attached, a short form that has stood alone as a man's name for well over a century.
- Familiar across the English-speaking world rather than only at home; it charts in Canada as well as the United States.
- Common enough that nobody asks twice, uncommon enough now that a classroom is unlikely to hold two.
- Four spellings are in real circulation — Jayden, Jaden, Jaiden, Jaydon — so he will spend a lifetime spelling it out. Choosing the most common one helps, but only somewhat.
- The -aden sound family dates a name the way Gary or Kevin do. It reads as belonging to a particular stretch of years, and it will keep doing so.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled, so if you want a name with one clean, agreed translation behind it, this is not that name.
- Jayden has also been given to girls in the United States, in far smaller numbers. It reads as a boy's name to most people, but the crossover exists.
