The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Jayden
Not settled — either from Hebrew Jadon, or a modern English coinage
Two serious readings compete. The first ties Jayden to Jadon, a name that appears in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Nehemiah, borne by one of the men who repaired the walls of Jerusalem; that name is usually read from a root meaning 'to judge' or 'thankful', though Hebraists differ. The second treats Jayden as a straightforward American invention — the sound of Jay joined to the -aden ending shared by Aiden, Hayden and Caden, made because it sounded right rather than because it meant anything. Both accounts have respectable support, and the truth may be that the biblical Jadon gave the spelling a foothold while the rhyme did the rest of the work.
Jadon → Jaden → Jayden
How it traveled
The oldest thread runs back to Jadon in the Book of Nehemiah, a Meronothite listed among the builders who rebuilt Jerusalem's wall after the exile — a name mentioned once and then left alone for centuries. The modern name surfaced in the United States in the later twentieth century, first as Jaden, and the Jayden spelling followed close behind.
Josiah
Yahweh supports
The Hebrew Yoshiyahu joins the divine name with a verb root usually rendered "supports" and sometimes "heals"; both readings point the same direction and the name is not seriously disputed.
Yoshiyahu → Iosias → Josias → Josiah
How it traveled
The name is Hebrew, Yoshiyahu, borne by the king of Judah who reigned in the late seventh century BC and whose reforms fill two long chapters of the book of Kings. Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible wrote it Iosias, and that form passed through Latin into early English Bibles as Josias.

Out loud, and in short
Jayden
JAY-den
Stress on the first syllable. English speakers get it right on first sight, and the four common spellings all sound identical aloud.
- Jay — The standard short form, and a long-established given name in its own right for men of every generation.
- J — Informal, mostly spoken among friends and teammates rather than written.
- JJ — Common where the middle name also starts with J; used informally and often sticks into adulthood.
- Jayde — Occasional and informal; overlaps in sound with the separate name Jade.
Josiah
joh-SY-uh
Three syllables, stress on the second. Some British speakers voice the middle consonant closer to joh-ZY-uh. Both are long-standing.
- Joe — The default informal short form in English, shared with Joseph and Joshua; stands alone as a given name in its own right.
- Si — An older English clipping, taken from the stressed middle syllable; also used for Simon and Silas.
- Josie — Used affectionately within families, though in the US it is far more often heard as a girl's name from Josephine.
- Siah — A modern informal short form, used the same way Isaiah is shortened.
- Also Jos.

The trade-offs, name by name
Jayden
Strengths
- Reads correctly the first time for any English speaker — no silent letters, no ambiguous vowels.
- Comes with Jay already attached, a short form that has stood alone as a man's name for well over a century.
- Familiar across the English-speaking world rather than only at home; it charts in Canada as well as the United States.
To consider
- Four spellings are in real circulation — Jayden, Jaden, Jaiden, Jaydon — so he will spend a lifetime spelling it out. Choosing the most common one helps, but only somewhat.
- The -aden sound family dates a name the way Gary or Kevin do. It reads as belonging to a particular stretch of years, and it will keep doing so.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled, so if you want a name with one clean, agreed translation behind it, this is not that name.
Josiah
Strengths
- A documented record stretching back to a biblical king of the seventh century BC, and continuous English use since the Reformation.
- Spelled one way that most Americans already recognize from scripture and from American history books.
- Established short forms in real use — Joe, Si, Siah — so a child has options without inventing any.
To consider
- It sits in a crowded sound family — Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah — and will occasionally be misheard as one of them, especially over the phone.
- The overtly biblical origin is unmistakable, which some families want and others would rather not signal.
- Josie, the affectionate form, reads strongly feminine in American English, so it may not stick for a boy.
