Where each name comes from
Jayden
Not settled — either from Hebrew Jadon, or a modern English coinage
Two serious readings compete. The first ties Jayden to Jadon, a name that appears in the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Nehemiah, borne by one of the men who repaired the walls of Jerusalem; that name is usually read from a root meaning 'to judge' or 'thankful', though Hebraists differ. The second treats Jayden as a straightforward American invention — the sound of Jay joined to the -aden ending shared by Aiden, Hayden and Caden, made because it sounded right rather than because it meant anything. Both accounts have respectable support, and the truth may be that the biblical Jadon gave the spelling a foothold while the rhyme did the rest of the work.
Jadon → Jaden → Jayden
How it traveled
The oldest thread runs back to Jadon in the Book of Nehemiah, a Meronothite listed among the builders who rebuilt Jerusalem's wall after the exile — a name mentioned once and then left alone for centuries. The modern name surfaced in the United States in the later twentieth century, first as Jaden, and the Jayden spelling followed close behind.
Silas
Either "of the forest" or "asked for" — the two readings compete
One line treats Silas as a Greek shortening of the Latin Silvanus, from silva, "wood, forest" — and the New Testament itself supports the link, since the letters of Paul call the same traveling companion Silvanus. The other treats it as a Greek spelling of the Aramaic Sheila, from Hebrew Sha'ul, "asked for, prayed for" — the name English renders as Saul. Both are serious scholarly positions, and neither has won.
Silvanus → Σιλᾶς (Silas) → Silas
How it traveled
The name is first documented in Greek, in the Acts of the Apostles, borne by a companion of Paul on his journeys through the eastern Mediterranean. From the Greek scriptures it passed into Latin and then into English, where Protestant and especially Puritan families favored biblical names outside the usual Peter-and-John range.

Out loud, and in short
Jayden
JAY-den
Stress on the first syllable. English speakers get it right on first sight, and the four common spellings all sound identical aloud.
- Jay — The standard short form, and a long-established given name in its own right for men of every generation.
- J — Informal, mostly spoken among friends and teammates rather than written.
- JJ — Common where the middle name also starts with J; used informally and often sticks into adulthood.
- Jayde — Occasional and informal; overlaps in sound with the separate name Jade.
Silas
SY-luhs
Two syllables, stress on the first, rhyming with "pilus". German and Scandinavian speakers say SEE-lahs, which is worth knowing if the family spans both.
- Si — The traditional English short form, in informal use for centuries; rare as a given name on its own.
- Sy — The same short form spelled phonetically; also stands alone as a given name, mostly among older generations.

The trade-offs, name by name
Jayden
Strengths
- Reads correctly the first time for any English speaker — no silent letters, no ambiguous vowels.
- Comes with Jay already attached, a short form that has stood alone as a man's name for well over a century.
- Familiar across the English-speaking world rather than only at home; it charts in Canada as well as the United States.
To consider
- Four spellings are in real circulation — Jayden, Jaden, Jaiden, Jaydon — so he will spend a lifetime spelling it out. Choosing the most common one helps, but only somewhat.
- The -aden sound family dates a name the way Gary or Kevin do. It reads as belonging to a particular stretch of years, and it will keep doing so.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled, so if you want a name with one clean, agreed translation behind it, this is not that name.
Silas
Strengths
- A spelling most English speakers already know from scripture and from Eliot's novel, so it rarely needs to be spelled out loud.
- Documented continuously in English since the Puritan era — a long record rather than a recent coinage.
- Identical in spelling across Spanish, Portuguese, French and German, needing no adaptation abroad.
To consider
- It is climbing quickly. A child named Silas now may share classrooms with others later, even though that is unlikely today.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled between "forest" and "asked for", so you cannot promise a relative one clean answer.
- Sylas and Silus turn up as variant spellings, and some listeners first hear Cyrus, so expect an occasional correction.
