The story of Javis
Ambrose was in a standoff with the empress and needed the crowd behind him, and the timing of the discovery has been noticed by every historian who has written about it since. The bones were declared to be those of Gervase and Protase, two martyrs otherwise unknown; miracles were reported immediately, and Augustine, then in Milan, describes the scene in his Confessions as an eyewitness. The cult spread across the west, the name Gervase went with it, and Norman French brought it to England, where it became the surname Jarvis, Gervis and Jervis. The American given name comes from the surname; Javis drops the r, which is exactly what most American accents did with it before the middle of the twentieth century.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Javis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Corin climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Corin's path sketches the road Javis is walking now.
Javis sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
