The story of Jasper
The gospel does not name or number the magi; medieval Western tradition settled on three and called them Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. Caspar became Jasper in English, and it was a real medieval English name. Separately, jasper is a stone whose name reached Greek from a Semitic language. Modern American use draws on both, and the name is given to girls in growing numbers alongside Juniper and Piper.

treasurer
The name is generally traced to Persian ganzabara, a treasurer, through Greek and Latin forms; the tradition assigning names to the magi is medieval rather than biblical. The unrelated stone jasper comes from a Semitic word and is a separate line that has influenced modern use.

The Andera test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jasper's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Andera climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Andera's path sketches the road Jasper is walking now.
Jasper sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented medieval English name with a genuinely long journey behind it.
- Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
- The stone gives it a second and quite separate association.
- It is read as a boy's name by default, and she will correct that often.
- The magi tradition is medieval rather than scriptural, which is worth knowing.
- A vampire novel gave the name a strong association for one generation.
