Mexican American naming swaps J and Y systematically, and the swap is not random. Yoselyn and Joselyn, Yaretzi and Jaretzy, Yesenia and Jesenia are the same names written two ways, because Spanish J is a throat sound and Y is the English J sound, so each letter can stand in for the other depending on which language you are reading in.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jaretzy

Our reading is that the J and Y alternation in this family is a systematic bilingual device rather than a slip. In Spanish, J is the jota, made at the back of the throat, and Y is a glide. In English, J is the affricate of judge and Y is a glide. So the sound at the start of these names, a plain glide, is written Y by anyone following Spanish and J by anyone following an English-influenced convention that reads J as the Spanish letter would have been read in an older orthography. Both are defensible and neither is standard, which is why the two spellings coexist in the same families and often on the same person's documents. The pattern runs through the whole Y-initial naming tradition, and it means a great many names in the American data are being counted twice.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Jaretzy is a Mexican American formation with no established etymology, belonging with Yaretzi, Jaretzi and Yaritza. Glosses giving it a Nahuatl meaning circulate in Mexican name books and are not supported by any Nahuatl dictionary or grammar. The tz digraph is genuine Mesoamerican orthography even where the name is not. It peaks in 2006.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The tz digraph is distinctive and consistently pronounced.
  • It belongs to an identifiable and living naming tradition.
  • Several short forms are available.
What to consider
  • No meaning can be given, and the ones in circulation are invented.
  • At least four spellings of the same sound are in use.
  • The initial letter is read differently in the two languages.
