Joan was the medieval English form and Jane the later one, and for a couple of centuries both were among the commonest women's names in the country. Jane stayed plain — it is the name English uses for an anonymous woman, the way Jack is used for a man. American naming in the twentieth century added endings to it as it added endings to everything: Janee, Janae, Janelle, Janette. What the -ee does specifically is pull the emphasis to the last syllable, which turns a name with no music in it into one with a beat.
