The story of Berna
The best-known bearer of the fuller name was fourteen years old, illiterate, asthmatic and the daughter of a miller who had lost his mill, and she gave her account of what she had seen in a grotto to several hostile interrogators over several years without materially changing it. That consistency is what the church's investigators found most difficult to explain away, and it is why the case went the way it did. She spent the rest of her short life in a convent a long way from home, refused to be made a spectacle of, and complained that people treated her like a curiosity. The short form here belongs to that name and to two or three others, and is the sort of thing a family arrives at rather than chooses.
Meaningscholars disagree
bear
On the American route the front element names the bear, which in Germanic is itself a substitute word rather than the inherited one. On the Turkish route the derivation is separate and disputed. So the meaning depends entirely on which tradition produced a given example, and the spelling records neither.
How the name formed
- A Germanic element naming the bear
- Bernadette, Bernice and Berenice in European use
- Berna as a short form of all of them
- Also an ordinary Turkish woman's name

Two syllables, stress on the first. Turkish says it with a fuller final vowel and a slightly different first one, and puts a light stress at the back, which is the Turkish rule for almost every word.

Fashion outlook
Berna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, clear and immediately sayable with no ambiguity.
- It is a genuine national name somewhere in the world rather than only a clipping.
- Bernie and Bern are both available and both are unpretentious.
- It reads as a short form in America and people will ask what it stands for.
- Two unrelated traditions produce the same spelling and only the family knows which.
- It is firmly of an earlier generation in American records.
