The story of Jamez
The shrine at Compostela claimed the body of the apostle James, and the pilgrimage to it was the greatest in medieval Europe outside Rome and Jerusalem. His name in Spanish was Iago, and the invocation Sant Iago was said so often, including as a battle cry, that the two words fused into Santiago; the syllables were then divided differently and Diego emerged from the same material. Spanish therefore ended up with Santiago, Diego, Jaime and Jacobo, all descended from one Hebrew name, and speakers treat them as four different names. English has the same situation in miniature with James and Jacob. The z spelling in this American form is a visual device with no effect on the sound, since the s of James is already voiced.

Hebrew Yaakov, of disputed meaning
James descends from Latin Iacomus, a late variant of Iacobus, from Hebrew Yaakov. The Spanish Diego is generally derived from the same name through Santiago, by a rebracketing of Sant Iago. Jamez is an American respelling with a z; its peak is 2003.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
