The story of Jadie
In Mesoamerica jade was worth more than gold. The Olmec, the Maya and the Mexica used it for masks, for burial goods and for tribute, and a Maya lord was buried with a jade bead in his mouth. When the Spanish arrived they were disappointed by this — they wanted metal — but they did notice the stone being worn against the body for kidney complaints, and named it for that rather than for anything the people using it would have recognized. The word came into English as a jewel name and then, in the twentieth century, as a girl's name; Jadie is Jade with the ending English adds to make a word sound like a person.
Meaning
the green stone, named for the kidney
From Spanish piedra de la ijada, stone of the flank, shortened in French to le jade and borrowed into English from there. Nephrite, the mineral name, is from Greek nephros, kidney, and means the same thing by a different route. The -ie ending is an English addition and carries no meaning.
