Where it comes from

The story of Jaclynn

Jacob is one of the most-used men's names in the Western tradition and produced almost no women's names, because the Hebrew Bible offers no obvious feminine and Latin did not build one. French did: Jacqueline appears from the thirteenth century, built with the diminutive ending that also gives Madeline and Aveline. It entered English use in the twentieth century and became enormously popular in America in the 1960s. The respellings followed, and they are numerous because the name has three variable positions: Jacquelyn, Jaclyn, Jacalyn, Jaquelin, Jaclynn. This one's best year is 1983.

Meaning

supplanter, heel-holder

Hebrew Yaaqov, traditionally connected to aqev, a heel, from the account of Jacob holding his twin's heel at birth. Latin Iacobus gave Iacomus in late Latin, which French took as Jacques; the feminine Jacqueline adds the French diminutive -eline. The -lynn ending of this spelling substitutes an American suffix for the French one.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaclynn went to 16 girls in 2025, but Jacklyn, Jaclyn and Jacklynn are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 177, which makes it the 783rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,055 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,081 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Jaclynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
