Where it comes from

The story of Jace

In the myth Jason is given as an infant to Chiron, the centaur who taught Achilles and Asclepius and who was famous as a healer, and his name belongs to the same vocabulary. The Greek iatros, a doctor, gives psychiatry, podiatry, paediatrics and geriatrics, so the root is still working in English. The name also appears in the New Testament, borne by a host in Thessalonica, which is how it entered Christian use; some Hellenised Jews took it as a Greek equivalent of Joshua. Jace is a modern American clipping of the whole thing, made in the 1990s and 2000s, and, like most short forms of that period, it is registered as a full legal name with nothing behind it.

Meaning

Greek iasthai, to heal

Jason is from Greek Iason, generally derived from iasthai, to heal, the root behind iatros, a physician, and the English ending -iatry. Jace is a modern clipped form; its female peak is 2013.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jace went to 8 girls in 2025, but Jacee and Jase are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 23, which makes it the 937th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,980 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 69,881 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Jace itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
