Where it comes from

The story of Izzabella

Medieval Spanish and Occitan speakers found Elizabeth awkward and dropped its opening syllable, producing Isabel, which then traveled back into French and English as a name in its own right; the Italian Isabella added the ending. It was worn by so many queens that it became a byword for royalty in three countries at once. The English-speaking world took it up again in the twentieth century, and the respellings followed, with Izabella and Izzabella both writing the z that the nickname Izzy had made ordinary.

Meaningscholars disagree

my God is an oath

Through Isabel from Elizabeth, Hebrew Elisheva: El, God, with sheva, an oath or the number seven, which in Hebrew idiom are the same root. My God is abundance is the competing reading. Both are serious and neither has driven the other out.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries several distinct short forms, Izzy and Bella and Belle, of quite different registers.
  • The name behind it is documented across five centuries of European royalty.
  • The z spelling is standard in Hungarian and Polish, so it is not without precedent.
What to consider
  • Isabella is overwhelmingly the standard spelling, and this one will be corrected for life.
  • Izabella with one z is also common, so there are three spellings of one sound in circulation.
  • The full name has been heavily used for two decades, so a child will meet others under Bella.
