Where it comes from

Our story of Iziah

The -iah names are among the most striking things to happen to American boys' naming since 1990. Isaiah, Josiah, Elijah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah and Zachariah all rose sharply in the same period, and once six genuine Hebrew names ending in the same sound were in wide use, the ending detached and became available on its own. Iziah, Amariah, Tobiah, Nehemiah and Messiah all appear in the records, and the boundary between an inherited name and a formation on the ending is not always drawable. Iziah is on the formation side: it has a biblical near-neighbor, no documented descent, and a 2001 peak that sits inside the rise of the names it resembles rather than before them.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source establishes an etymology for this spelling. Isaiah is Yəšaʿyāhû, Yah is salvation, and Josiah is Yōʾšiyyāhû, Yah supports — both settled. Iziah matches neither. A biblical Izziah appears once in Ezra 10:25, generally read as Yah sprinkles, and is not documented as the source of the American name. The -iah ending functions as a free suffix in modern American use.

Iziah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 80 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Iziah went to 16 boys in 2025, but Isiah is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 136, which makes it the 792nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,816 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 12,559 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 106,755 for Iziah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Izzy is a warm and widely used short form.
  • The vowels are open and there is no difficult consonant.
  • It sits comfortably beside a group of very popular names.
What to consider
  • There is no established meaning behind it.
  • Isaiah is far commoner and will be assumed.
  • Iziah, Izaiah, Izayah and Isaiah are four spellings of nearly one sound.
