The story of Ivonne
Yves is a Breton and Norman name, carried by a thirteenth-century Breton lawyer-saint who became the patron of lawyers and of the poor, and it has been ordinary in France ever since. The feminine Yvonne became fashionable in France in the nineteenth century and spread through Europe and the Americas in the twentieth. German and Spanish both write it Ivonne, since the initial Y is unusual in both, and it was widely given in Mexico, Germany and Brazil in the second half of the century.
Meaning
yew tree; yew wood
Germanic iv, a yew, which gave the French name Yves through the Normans, and Yvonne as its feminine diminutive. The yew was the bow wood of northern Europe, which is why the tree turns up in so many old names.
