Where it comes from
From Elisheva to Issabella
The story of Issabella
Elisabel lost its opening syllable in Occitan and Spanish mouths and became Isabel, one of the great royal names of Iberia and England. Italian added the diminutive ending to make Isabella. The name rose sharply across the English-speaking world after 2000 and the respellings followed — Izabella, Issabella, Isabela — each keeping the sound and changing the look.
Meaningscholars disagree
my God is an oath
Elizabeth is from Hebrew Elisheva, generally read as my God is an oath or my God is abundance. Isabel is the medieval Iberian development, and by the thirteenth century the two were used as separate names in the same families. The derivation itself is not seriously disputed.

The trade-off
- A documented line reaching back to a Hebrew name of the first century and earlier.
- Four complete short forms, in three languages.
- The sound is recognized everywhere in Europe and the Americas.
- Isabella is enormously more common and will be written for her on nearly every form.
- Ten letters and four syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
- The sound is among the most-used of its generation, so a classroom may hold more than one.
